  • Running in boots made for horse riding is no fun. I was meant to ride but I had a new student who had never been on a horse before so I ended up giving her my horse and running beside her to teach her the basics.

  • Kokoda Challenge

    One of the phys. ed. coordinators at my school made a proposal to me at school camp on the weekend asking if I would like to lead a team of students next year on the Kokoda challenge at the Gold Coast next year.

    In case you don’t know, the Kokoda challenge is (according to the website): "a gruelling, cross country, 4-person team event held over 96km, with a time limit for completion of 39 hours".

    96 km is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea and the 39 hour time limit is in honour of the 39th Militia, the first Australian troops to set foot on the Kokoda Track.

    Just for a brief history lesson - The KokodaTrail campaign is an infamous campaign that occurred between July and November in 1942.  It consisted of a series of battles fought between Japanese and applied (primarily Australian) forces during the Pacific War of World War II.  Following a landing near Gona (north coast of New Guinea), Japanese forces attempted to advance south overland through the mountains to seize Port Moresby as part of a strategy of isolating Australia from the United States. The most direct way across these rugged mountains was by a jungle pathway known as the Kokoda Track.  During those four months, Australian soldiers fought the Japanese in appalling conditions, first to keep them from reaching Port Moresby and then to push them back over the mountains (Owen Stanley Range) to their north coast strongholds at Buna, Gona and Sanananda.

    Anyway, I have agreed to take on the challenge.  I was actually really flattered to be asked, such a compliment! (And such a boost for me on my own personal journey - I’ve come so far that someone would actually consider me as a first option for something like this!). Just the motivation and challenge I need in preparation for my trip to South America at the end of 2015.  The training looks intense but oddly I am excited.  I am excited to challenge myself, motivate students to achieve things they never thought possible and follow in the footsteps of the ANZACS.
